The 2025/2026 season has begun at the Tamási Áron Theatre

The 2025/2026 season at the Tamási Áron Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe began with a guest performance: on August 21st, actress Zsuzsa Gajzágó and her fellow performers presented Uncle Reality at the Partium Hungarian Days. The company had actually already begun rehearsals in Gheorgheni, where a co-production of Eugène Ionesco’s play Rhinoceros, directed by László Bocsárdi, is being prepared for the 40th anniversary of the Figura Studio Theatre.

In September we will be guest performing in Budapest with The Tempest at the Örkény István Theatre on the 12th and 13th September. This tour is taking place in the hope of establishing a long-term collaboration between the two theatres, with the next step being a performance by the Örkény István Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe. There is enormous interest in the Tamási Áron Theatre’s guest performance among Budapest audiences, which is why two performances were scheduled for the 13th, for which tickets sold out in a matter of hours.

Almost simultaneously with the tour, the Hungarian Theatre Critics’ Awards Gala will be held in Budapest on 15th September, which we are eagerly awaiting, as The Tempest, one of the most successful Hungarian productions of the past season, has been nominated in four categories for the Theater Critics’ Award: Best Theatre Production, Best Actor (Tibor Pálffy), Best Supporting Actress (Janka Korodi), and Best Supporting Actor (Bence Kónya-Ütő).

On 24th September, Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros – the co-production of the Tamási Áron Theatre and the Figura Studio Theatre, directed by László Bocsárdi – will be premiered. This will be the first new production of the season, followed by a performance directed by Radu Afrim, the premiere of which is scheduled in late November. In December, a young and very talented director from Budapest, Marcel Bélai, will begin working with the company, with the premiere of the performance expected in late February or early March. In March and April, Máté Hegymegi will once again direct at the Tamási Áron Theatre, and at the end of the season, the company will meet with internationally renowned Slovenian theatre director Tomi Janežič for a workshop. The company and the renowned director are working together with the undisguised goal of creating a joint performance from this collaboration at the end of the year 2026.

Two performances by the Tamási Áron Theatre have been selected for this year’s National Theatre Festival, considered to be the most prestigious theatre event in Romania. On 22nd October, the company will perform The Tempest, and on 24th October, An Angel Comes to Babylon, both twice in Bucharest. The festival program includes 39 theatre performances, six of which are Hungarian productions.

In addition to the Theatre Critics’ Award nominations, the Tamási Áron Theatre also has a nominee for the Csíky András Drama Award. On Monday, 25th August, the Csíky András Foundation in Cluj-Napoca announced the nominees for the award, among whom is actress Janka Korodi for her performances in The Tempest and When Will Summer be? The final decision on the winner is expected by 15th November.
