László Bocsárdi is directing a Dürrenmatt play

The next production of the Tamási Áron Theatre will be based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s An Angel Comes to Babylon, directed by László Bocsárdi. The rehearsals for the production began on Friday afternoon in the Chamber Hall of the theatre.

After The Visit of the Old Lady (directed by Attila Kiss Seprődi, 1976), The Collaborator (directed by Zalán Zakariás, 2007) and The Physicists (directed by Zalán Zakariás, 2011), this will be the fourth Dürrenmatt production at our theatre.

First of all, László Bocsárdi read a quote by Péter Esterházy that was mainly about the fact that in theatre, individuals by their very nature live – and luxuriate in – their differences from each other, while the overall concept of a company can only be created through a sense of identity, which is the basic condition of any well-functioning community.

In the current world situation, the issue of responsibility and accountability is becoming extremely important, Bocsárdi said, and then listed the performances he directed in recent years, all of which have been about raising awareness. According to Bocsárdi, the only theatre worth doing today is theatre that aims to awaken consciences, and it is not enough to produce performances just because that is what a theatre company does best.

After the introductory remarks, the director handed over the floor to his dramaturge, Réka Dálnoky, who briefly introduced Dürrenmatt’s life and art, and then discussed the most important issues and biblical motifs of the play.

Dürrenmatt’s dramaturgy is a dramaturgy of unexpected turns, constantly putting the viewer in a new situation. At the same time, the great Swiss playwright believes that comedy is the only genre that can express the tragedy of the world.
