Anton Chekhov

The Cherry Orchard

Main Stage
Premiere: 5th of November 2014
Duration: 3 hour (with 1 interval)

Regarded unanimously as a classic of the 20th century theatre, the play presents themes of cultural futility: the futile attempts of the aristocracy to maintain its status and of the bourgeoisie to find meaning in its newfound materialism. The plot revolves around one situation: the widow Madame Ranevsky returns home to her harmonious family estate only to find that the house and the cherry orchard will be sold to clear debts, unless the family can raise sufficient funds. Although described by the writer as a comedy, it deals with themes like solitude, passage of time and the universal powerlessness of the human kind.

Sardar Tagorivsky was born in Russia and is now living in Budapest. He is the artistic leader of the Maesteén Company. Interested in experimental theatre, he has had the privilege to learn from Paolo Antonio Simioni, Oleg Zsukovszkij and Tamás Ascher.
